Ph.D. at the Faculty of Theology

The aim of the doctoral degree program is to train and recruit researchers for posts at universities, colleges and other institutions in society that make great demands on scientific methods of work and insight.

Ph.d.-program

The partly-taught researcher training at the Faculty of Theology takes place within a ph.d.-program and lasts for three years full time. This program includes all the faculty’s research areas: Biblical studies, Church History, Systematic Theology, Ethics and Professionalism, Practical Theology, Diaconal Studies, and Religious Studies.

The researcher training at the faculty is to qualify candidates for research activity and other work where high demands are made to academic understanding and analytic thinking.

The doctorate ph.d. (philosophiae doctor) is awarded on the basis of:

  • a completed course of study (30 credits)
  • an academic dissertation
  • a doctoral defence, consisting of a trial lecture and a public defence of the dissertation (disputatio)

Application deadlines

The deadlines for applications from candidates with external financing are the 15th March and the 15th September. If you are applying for a research fellowship, the deadline in the fellowship announcement applies. More on applications and admissions.

The dr.philos. degree

It is also possible to put oneself forward for a dr.philos. (doctor philosophiae) degree, the name for the open doctorate with no taught component. The degree has no requirements concerning teaching or supervision. You apply to the faculty to defend your dissertation for the dr.philos. degree only once your dissertation is complete.
