The Archbishop and the Virgin
When Archbishop Jacob of Lund died in 1410, he left behind a will where he made a sculpture of the Virgin Mary in Lund Cathedral one of the beneficiaries. What did this imply, and what does it tell us about medieval people’s relationship to sculpted images? Moreover, perhaps Jacob’s act can learn us something about people’s relationship with cult statues regardless of time and place?
