The Religious Road to Trump: Evangelical Support for America’s New President
January 20th will mark the day that Donald Trump will become President of the United States for the second time. Why have evangelical Christians in USA supported a candidate that seemingly represents the opposite of conservative Christian values?
In all three of his presidential elections Trump has enjoyed the support of a sizeable majority of white evangelical Christians. This voting bloc, by large margins, has cast ballots for him at a much higher rate than the nation as a whole.
For scholars of American Christianity, this evangelical commitment to Trump and the MAGA cause has paradoxically been both a confusing surprise (aberration even) and a perfectly logical culmination of evangelical’s priorities and values.
In her semester opening lecture, Associate Professor Allison Murray will unpack the history of evangelical political engagement in the United States and some of the complexities of the evangelical-Trump relationship.
Support for Trump amongst these Christian voters has been unwavering through three election cycles, and political allegiances have shifted the make-up of the American evangelical coalition. This presentation will bring to light the ways that gender, politics, race, faith, myth, and celebrity all play a role in why so many white American evangelicals are so enamoured by Trump and his vision for America.
