Abstract This study investigates David’s masculinity in the Hebrew Bible and in biblical scholarship. First, it offers a brief summary of the importance of the character of David for Hebrew Bible masculinity studies and for the developing scholarly checklist of masculinity traits in the Hebrew Bible. Then David is assessed according to the books of Samuel’s configuration of ideal masculinity. This is done by focusing on David alongside his three male co-protagonists, Saul, Jonathan, and Absalom, in order to tease out the dynamics of gender performance, as these four characters both embody an ideal and fall short of it. Lastly, the question of Yhwh and hegemonic masculinity in relation to David is considered. How does a hegemonic male such as David best cope with a divine patron, who is the ultimate alpha male? The solution lies in David’s recognition of the power dynamics and hierarchy in a patron-client relationship between hegemonic males.

What does it mean to be a responsible subject, and what kind of subject would such a responsible
subject be? These are philosophical questions highly pertinent to such global and planetary challenges of our
time as the climate crisis, but they were also important for the philosophical and theological discussion on
the reconstruction after the Second World War and the threat of the nuclear bomb. In this essay, I approach
these philosophical questions through a historical exchange between two of the most influential thinkers of
the twentieth century who were between 1948 and 1961 colleagues at the University of Basel: the philosopher
Karl Jaspers and the theologian Karl Barth. Both were highly involved in the discussion of social and political
issues of their time. Their starting points for their intellectual endeavors diverge, however: Jaspers departed
from human experience, and Barth from the interruption of human experience through divine revelation. While
Jaspers emphasized the universal dimension of this experience, Barth, for his part, accentuated the particular
and concrete. The critical and crosswise comparison of their understanding of responsibility is constructive—
precisely because of their conflicting perspectives—in the search for a more complex understanding of who and
what a responsible subject might be that could take on challenges that are both particular and universal in scope.

This chapter takes the image of home as a starting point for an explorative inquiry into the relation between theological anthropology and dwelling in conversation with Werner Jeanrond’s hermeneutics. What is home, from the perspective of theology? What kind of human being is implied in a theological conception of home? And is home a starting point or an end point? For someone intensely concerned about home and homes, in all manner of ways, and cognizant of the tension that resides in every concept of home, Jeanrond’s œuvre is an excellent starting point for a critical interrogation of what home might mean in theology, especially in relation to the question of starting points. My interpretation of Jeaonrond's hermeneutics of dwelling will therefore attempt to tease out such a hermeneutics both from his explicit hermeneutics and theology as well as from the more implicit ‘theology of method’ that comes through in his writings. The tension between home as starting point and end point in theology remains, and it is here that Jeanrond’s hermeneutics as a hermeneutics of dwelling might have something to teach us.

Abstract This article analyzes the palimpsestuous interplay between the Book of Job and the cover-art of Slayer’s 2001 album, God Hates Us All . The album’s cover features digital manipulation of pages from the Book of Job, where certain biblical excerpts remain visible amidst a backdrop of blacked-out sections and overlaid with lyrics and annotations. This fusion lends Slayer’s lyrics a dual theological and exegetical dimension, encouraging listeners/readers to explore the texts in tandem. The study seeks to uncover any discernible patterns in the treatment of biblical passages, analyze how the resulting theodicy reveals a particular reading of the Book of Job, and elucidate the contemporary relevance and purpose of this act of reception and artistic creation. In doing so, the article contributes to the ongoing exploration of the Bible’s Nachleben , emphasizing that exegetes and theologians are neither the only nor the most important interpreters. There are other voices literally screaming to be heard.

This article proposes an alternative analytical framework to sustainability transitions research (STR) by drawing on critical scholarship on grassroots innovations and post-development studies. Breaking with the fixation of STR on scalable innovations and socio-technical regime change, this alternative framework conceptualizes sustainability transitions as transitions towards the pluriverse (TTP). TTP offers a bottom-up, decolonial and context-sensitive approach to transitions that acknowledges the diversity of transition pathways and places local communities and grassroots innovations at the center of transition efforts. Our framework consists of four analytical dimensions: place, difference, alliances and autonomy. We apply this framework to two case studies of ecovillages in Latin America, and answer the following research question: In what ways do ecovillages promote (or fail to promote) TTP in Latin America? We compare the two ecovillages in relation to the four dimensions and analyze the challenges they face in promoting TTP. The results show that socio-economic differences between place-based groups create power asymmetries that shape local transition pathways. The specificity of each place influences the range of strategies available for grassroots initiatives to form alliances with other actors. Recognition of their role within local power dynamics and a commitment to social justice are crucial elements for building horizontal collaborations and fostering autonomy. This article contributes to a theory of change for TTP by reflecting on the role of ‘modern’ individuals, the state and the market in the creation of the pluriverse.

Widely recognised as a fully accomplished painter and among the first artist-women to succeed in a male-dominated world, scholarship on the extraordinary life and work of Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–c.1656)is abundant. She is rightly credited for expressing unparalleled qualities in giving her female protagonists both emotional depth and agility. However, attributions of most of her surviving works have often been made on stylistic grounds and circumstantial evidence, as she did not always sign or date her paintings. One such unsigned and undated work is the Penitent Magdalene in the collection of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo. Purchased in England as a painting by Jusepe de Ribera and donated to the museum in 1866, the work has since been regarded as puzzling, partly due to the unresolved nature of an object in the depicted woman’s left hand. Revisiting the painting, the aim of this article is to support its attribution to Artemisia Gentileschi through a combination of art historical and technical investigations and to examine the nature of the ‘curious thing’, and to do so at a time when our knowledge of the artist and of workshop production in Naples has expanded.

The material turn in art history has broadened the scope of research, incorporating previously overlooked artefacts from so-called minor and popular arts into the scholarly discourse. Diversifying the discipline, the turn has also made scholars aware of the long distances and the many intermediators that were involved for the materials to come into the artists’ hands; the material constituencies of their objects of study; and the relations between matter and the senses. This essay critically evaluates key scholarship that motivated art historians to engage with such unpretentious artefacts exemplified by three case studies from the late Middle Ages.

In this article, I discuss the need for an ecological conversion in order to meet the challenges of a nature and climate crisis that is both global and local. Conversion is here understood
as a ‘transformation of hearts and minds toward greater love of God, each other, and creation’. Given that the nature and climate crises are anthropogenic, and that global warming, climate tipping points, and the extinction of species, are to a certain degree caused by carbon and oil extraction, industry, travel and consumption of goods in the global north, Pope Francis underscores the need for repentance, self-sacrifice, and a transformation of the heart. There is a need for change even in our understanding of love, a reorientation of human attention and praxis. It affects the personal level, the political level, and praxis. Even if we think that we know what love means and can recognize it when we see it, I argue that the new situation forces us to reconsider the praxis of love once more, learning to love in the Anthropocene.

In this article, the question of humanity and nature is pursued in the direction of cosmology. Mjaaland sees a connection between Steffens and Spinoza, who interprets the relationship between matter and spirit holistically and thinks in terms of processes. Furthermore, Spinoza, like Steffens later, understands love as an expression of the immanent presence of God. Mjaaland points out that Spinoza became important not only for Steffens, but later also for Arne Næss, the founder of deep ecology and perhaps the most important Norwegian philosopher of the 20th century. In Spinoza's dictum Deus sive natura, Næss sees a potential for liberation within a modern culture that is alienated from nature and therefore destroys it. Although Næss hardly mentions Steffens, there are conceptual and structural similarities in their philosophy of nature. The line from Spinoza and Steffens via Næss can also be extended further into the Anthropocene era to the cosmology of Arne Johan Vetlesen. Mjaaland's study shows how a central motif of Norwegian philosophical history is regaining prominence in the Anthropocene, not only ontologically and cosmologically, but also theologically and morally.

The referent of αὐτοῦ in Mk 2.15 is grammatically ambiguous and remains a point of scholarly debate. Does Mark say that Jesus attended a banquet in Levi’s house, or that Jesus hosted one in his own home, with Levi and others as his guests? The current status quaestionis is basically undecided and timeworn arguments keep being rehearsed. Accordingly, this article attempts to move the conversation forward by revisiting some previously touched-upon yet underexplored notions of Mark’s presentation. After reviewing prior arguments, it first adopts a social-scientific lens to show that Jesus is portrayed as host—a role that, in context, implies ownership of the house. Thereafter, adopting a narratological approach, the study analyzes Mark’s use of ‘house’ demonstrating that the idea of Jesus having a house aligns with Mark’s broader characterization of Jesus, is supported by several other references to a Capernaum residence, and reflects a pattern according to which house owners are typically named—except in 2.15—thus, implying the house is Jesus’s. Taken together, these observations support the conclusion that according to Mk 2.15 the house was Jesus’s.

This article discusses how a person becomes responsible and accountable towards other human beings, as member of a community, in relation to God, and as an agent in nature. In Kierkegaard’s works, I argue, this process begins with responsivity, with the “single individual” (den Enkelte) responding to a text and thus entering into a process of indirect communication with the author, with oneself, and with God as absolute other. The process of responsibilization evolves throughout Kierkegaard’s authorship, from Repetition and The Concept of Anxiety to Works of Love. Neighborly love, I suggest, raises the question of sensitivity to the suffering of others and responsivity to their needs. Whereas Kierkegaard sees preferential love as an expression of self-love, the extended me, he points to the extended we as an expression of universal love. God is thereby emphasized as the middle term in all social relations, the radical otherness that makes a community of love possible. Finally, I suggest reconsidering Kierkegaard’s understanding of responsibilization as a response to the more-than-human (to God, but also to non-human creatures). This coming community, I argue, to which humans belong, will have to offer an even more extended understanding of responsibility, and a new perception of what it means being responsively and responsibly human.

Though metal music forms part of the global reception history of John’s Apocalypse and influences the eschatological conceptions of millions of listeners, it has received limited attention in standard textbooks and previous studies. Drawing on L. Cushing Stahlberg’s analytical framework and terminology, this article examines the retellings of the book of Revelation in the lyrics of Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen,” Megadeth’s “Blessed be the Dead,” and Testament’s “Seven Seals.” The analysis highlights both common and distinctive features of these songs in relation to their approach, stance, and filter. In addition to addressing this under-researched material, the article argues that these—and other Metal—retellings of Revelation are not only interesting and significant as innovative and idiosyncratic reinterpretations of the biblical text but also contribute to broader discussions on the formation of contemporary ideas about eschatology.

The convergence of biblical narratives and popular culture presents a fertile area of study, offering
valuable insights into how ancient texts are appropriated and reimagined in contemporary contexts.
A particularly illustrative example of this conjunction is the repurposing of the biblical story of King
Solomon’s wisdom in judgment (1 Kgs 3:16–28) in the widely popular and critically acclaimed
sitcom Seinfeld, episode “The Seven” (S7E13). This study draws on a close analysis of key scenes
and dialogues, employing L. Cushing-Stahlberg’s analytical framework, to examine how Seinfeld
reinterprets and recontextualizes the biblical narrative. Through this diagnostic lens, the article
explores how the ancient story is adapted to align with the comedic tone and sensibilities of modern
television. It identifies both parallels and departures between the biblical account and its humorous
reimagining, analyzing how comedy is used to engage with and comment on religious themes. In
doing so, the study contributes to ongoing scholarly discussions about the Bible’s presence and
function in popular culture, offering insights into the mechanisms of adaptation and reinterpretation
in comedic contexts. By examining the reception of biblical narratives in contemporary media, the
article not only illuminates the processes through which sacred texts are reshaped for modern
audiences but also enriches the broader discourse on the enduring resonance of biblical texts in
popular culture.

This volume aims to rethink the intersections of gender and religion, as well as the secular and religious, in implementing and challenging gender equality at individual, institutional, and societal levels in the regions around the Baltic Sea. Acknowledging the diversity of societies and the significance of socio-historical contexts, the empirical data discussed in this book draw attention to the under-researched region of post-socialist Baltic states. The analyses presented in the chapters are based on fieldwork carried out in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Norway. This volume includes sociological, anthropological, historical, political science, and theological perspectives and covers five broad research areas: a shifting concept of gender equality and its developments in Baltic and Nordic countries; a diversity of developments within religious groups related to issues of gender equality and the negotiation of competing gender ideologies; inter-religious developments and gender equality; the role of religions in the construction of public discourse on gender equality; and religious socialization, focusing on the promotion of religious gender models through socialization and public education.

This volume explores the idea of the unruly book, from books now known by their titles alone to books that subverted structures of power and gender. The contributors show how these books functioned as “sticky” objects, and they examine the story of what such books signified to the people who wrote, read, discussed, yearned for, or even prohibited them. The books examined are those of the first millennium of the Common Era, and the writings of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and related traditions. In particular, the contributors examine the bounty of books within this period that are hard to pin down, whether extant, lost, or imagined-books that challenge modern scholars to reconceptualize our notions of books (biblical or otherwise), religion, manuscript culture, and intellectual history. Through the critical analyses presented in this volume, the contributors negotiate the diverse stories told by unruly books and show that by listening to the stories that books tell, we learn more about the worlds that imagined and discussed them.

The story of gender inclusive language in the Church of Norway reflects a fifty year long, complex development. In short, the story goes from gender inclusive language as a non-existent and silenced topic to a fierce debate through more than two decades from the middle of the 1990s, up to the present situation where gender inclusive language is once again a silent topic. Or it has been silenced. One theory considered in this essay, is that other theological approaches, first and foremost eco-theology, indigenous theology, disability theology and LHBTQI-theology, make it difficult to maintain a separate awareness of the theological implications of gender. Another theory is that gender inclusive language is such a difficult case to fight that the battle has been lost. A third – perhaps, overly optimistic – theory about the current state of silence, is that matters of gender have now been resolved in the liturgical practice in the Church of Norway. In the conclusion, I will point to some possible interpretations and argue that gender perspectives do not need to be held in competition with other marginalized perspectives within the context of the Church of Norway but that they can and should be viewed in conjunction with them.

This contribution provides an overview of the relationship between innovation and religion. It addresses this relationship (1) as processes of internal religious innovation and (2) as external innovation effects of religion. Processes of internal religious innovation include the emergence of new religions and the change of existing religions. Globalization, migration, and pluralization spur innovations within the religious field. As a theoretical approach, economics of religion helps to analyze religious innovations as processes of adaptation. By contrast, external innovation effects of religion go beyond the religious field, as religions can influence technological, economic, and social transformations. Scholarship has studied the impact of religion on entrepreneurship, technological change, and different development fields (e.g., health care, education). The review of existing studies shows that religion is neither fundamentally opposed to innovation nor generally conducive to it. Relating the research more closely to innovation studies could have systematizing effects on studies about religion and innovation.

Energy transitions play a crucial role in addressing today's social, economic, and ecological challenges. However, recent studies show that energy transitions may reproduce current injustices and potentially create new injustices. To address the equitable distribution of benefits and burdens which may arise with energy-related innovations, energy justice has become a key issue in energy transitions research. This article focuses on how innovative living spaces (ILS) – namely Positive Energy Districts and ecovillages in Europe – address energy justice. These two forms of ILS represent top-down (Positive Energy Districts) and bottom-up (ecovillages) sustainability solutions. So far, their respective potentials and shortcomings in terms of energy justice and what we can learn from them are insufficiently understood. Based on an exploratory qualitative multiple case study, this article addresses this gap. To study energy justice in ILS, we extend the dominant theoretical discourse on energy justice to include energy of human, animals, plants, and ecosystems, as well as understanding animals, plants, and ecosystems as stakeholders of energy transitions. The results suggest that although both forms of ILS are currently niche developments, both are promising approaches to improve energy justice. At the same time, our analysis highlights the complexity of implementing energy justice on the local level. Design (bottom-up, top-down), emphasis (ecological solutions, energy technologies) and (non)intentionality affect energy justice in ILS. Our empirical insights suggest that ILS can inspire other residential areas to reflect on energy justice issues, and closer cooperation between Positive Energy Districts and ecovillages may contribute to creating more awareness for energy justice.

Cultural appropriation has recently become a central topic in discussions regarding majority churches’ adoption of ‘Eastern’ spiritual practices. This article employs a Vygotskian-Bakhtinian perspective on appropriation as developed by James Wertsch (1998) to examine the research question, how have the Danish and Norwegian majority churches made yoga their own, and how is yoga preserved as something that also belongs to someone else? The data consist of two types of sources: ten field visits conducted between January and November 2023; and a qualitative survey distributed in January 2024, with fifteen submissions from Norwegian respondents and sixteen from Danish respondents. The analysis reveals that 1) the churches’ primary objectives play a crucial role in how yoga is incorporated in existing practices such as church services; 2) Christian concepts do not entirely replace historically attributed yoga expressions; and 3) the God-centrism of church yoga is well aligned with the prevailing holistic doctrine of self-spirituality. Based on our findings, we conclude that the majority churches in Norway and Denmark have appropriated yoga as part of their own theological tradition, introducing two novel concepts: linguistic domestication; and material domestication.

The human body stands at a fascinating intersection between what all people share and what each culture makes of it. Our bodies today are not so different from those of ancient people, allowing us to recognize experiences across time and place. Yet ideas about the body—its meanings, values, and taboos—vary widely.
The Body in the Hebrew Bible takes this insight as its starting point. Written in a lively, conversational style, this book presents a comprehensive introduction to the body in the Hebrew Bible. Organized anatomically from the inside out and from top to bottom, it explores everything from the location of the nefesh (life force) in the throat to the seductive power of hair and the moral symbolism of the kidneys. Along the way, Anne Katrine de Hemmer Gudme and Søren Lorenzen map out not only human bodies but also animal, angelic, and divine ones, helping readers see both the biblical roots of modern perceptions of the body and the surprising ways in which ancient conceptions differ from contemporary ones.
Drawing on perspectives from disability studies, sensory studies, gender studies, and cognitive linguistics, The Body in the Hebrew Bible remains fully accessible to newcomers. Ideal for undergraduate students in theology, biblical studies, religious studies, and cultural studies—and a valuable resource for instructors—it offers an engaging, easy‑to‑use entry point into the cultural world of biblical bodies.

What does it mean to live in space—not just occupy it, but inhabit it
meaningfully? Thresholds and Places explores how spatial experience
shapes human existence, tracing the tension between moments of tran-
sition and sites of belonging. Thresholds are where we cross into the
ambiguous and the unknown; places are where we find orientation and
familiarity. Drawing on philosophy, literature, and lived experience, this
book reveals how human beings are always situated—both between
and within—these two existential dimensions. Through reflections on
cities, homes, architecture, and the unnoticed textures of everyday life,
it shows how space is not empty or neutral, but charged with meaning.
This is an exploration of how we dwell, move, and transform—and how,
in the interplay between thresholds and places, the heterogeneity of
space finds its form.

This edited collection offers the first engagement with Werner G. Jeanrond’s theological thinking, spanning from hermeneutics through systematic theology to politics.Available open access and featuring more than twenty renowned scholars with a global reach, this work tackles one of Jeanrond’s key questions: “How can theological thought begin today, in the midst of a confusing plurality of methods?” The problem of the starting point requires a critical and self-critical theological reflection. The academics in this book embark on a journey which takes us through five different fields of study, each of which capture a strand of Jeanrond’s far-reaching body of work. From hermeneutics to politics to moral virtues and spirituality, this volume provides a comprehensive look at the thought of one of the most influential systematic theologians of the twentieth century.

His extensive and multifaceted work is gaining new relevance in the context of the worsening climate and nature crisis, which is often described using the term Anthropocene. It is not so much his scientific findings that are decisive here as his interdisciplinary approach. Steffens established his holistic thinking at the interfaces between the natural sciences and the humanities, between philosophy and theology, among other fields, thus proving himself to be a pioneer of the Anthropocene. Eleven contributions critically examine possible impulses, but also aporias, in Steffens' thinking.

The Hostesswith the Mostest: Women, Hospitality, and Gender Performance in the Hebrew Bible.

With this presentation, I wish to combine two lines of investigation that I have presented at two past GeMANE meetings: the question of women offering hospitality in the Hebrew Bible (Barcelona 2017), and the relationship between hegemonic masculinity and hegemonic femininity in biblical literature (Malta 2024).
In my work on Hebrew Bible hospitality texts, I use anthropological fieldwork (Julian Pitt Rivers; Michael Herzfeld) in Mediterranean-type societies to create a model of the kind of hospitality practices one could expect in this kind of society. Then, I use my model to investigate Hebrew Bible hospitality accounts against these expectations. In this kind of investigation, which is inspired by the work of Philip Esler, the model is not a description of any lived or historical reality. It is rather an analytical tool that helps me to pose the right questions to the texts and to wonder about the right details in the text.
In this presentation, I wish to revisit the question of women offering hospitality in the Hebrew Bible. Generally, in these texts, hospitality is the privilege and social duty of the male head of the household. There are exceptions, however, as I presented in my 2017-Gemane paper. Different expectations seem to apply to unmarried and financially independent women, such as Rahab the sex worker in Joshua 2, incredibly wealthy married women, such as royal women, and supernatural women, such as Wisdom personified in Proverbs 9. In this context, the case of the Woman of Shunem in First Kings 4 is an interesting case-study. She is married, she is ‘great’ (gedolah), possibly referring to wealth, she is described as socially well-connected, and she offers lavish and consistent hospitality to the prophet Elisha and his servant.
I wish to examine the Shunamite’s hospitality behavior in terms of gender performance, specifically the performance of hegemonic femininity (Schippers; Charlebois) and hegemonic masculinity (Connell & Messerschmidt). If we look at the character of the Shunamite intersectionally, she is intriguing. She is a childless (not barren!) married woman, relatively speaking a vulnerable position for women in the Hebrew Bible, but she demonstrates significant social agency in the narrative, offering hospitality without involving her husband, refusing a counter-gift from a renowned prophet, and handling both material wealth and social connections. My question is, can an intersectional analysis combined with an analysis of gender performance in Second Kings 4 help us to untangle the intricate power dynamics in the text?

Technology has always been part of society, but the kind of technology we live by shapes how we live. This project investigates how digitalization unfolds within an established religious institution, focusing on the Church of Norway as a case study.
While institutional religious participation is in decline across Europe, churches remain among the most significant actors in civil society. The shift to a digital era brings organizational changes as well as new opportunities for service provision and public engagement. The project explores questions such as how the development of digital infrastructure transforms a religious institution, and how the integration of digital communication reshapes physical meeting places where specific religious services take place.
The Church of Norway (CoN) will serve as the empirical case for this study. Like other majority churches in the Nordic region, the CoN has been an early adopter of the internet and social media. Empirical material will include participant observation of practices such as “drop-in weddings”—a recent innovation designed to attract people to the church in more informal and accessible ways.

In the Hebrew Bible, texts about royalty are packed full of information that speaks directly to the senses with descriptions of polychrome textiles, glittering gold, and enticing scents. These texts underline the relationship between beauty, luxury, wealth, and power in biblical literature and cognate texts. With this presentation, I wish to investigate the interplay between body-imagination and the senses in the reading of three selected Hebrew Bible passages, the description of the king and his bride in Psalm 45, the queen of Sheba’s visit to Jerusalem in First Kings 10, and queen Jezebel’s death in Second Kings 9. For all three examples, I ask if approaching these texts through the use of sensory perception stimulates body-imagination, and if the aesthetic of these texts triggers mechanisms of identification and empathy in the reader.

Hospitality is both everywhere and nowhere in the Hebrew Bible. It is nowhere, because there is no word for hospitality in Biblical Hebrew, nor are there words for host, guest, or invitation. But hospitality is there in so many Hebrew Bible narratives, as a concept and a theme, as a recognizable and meaningful social setting, in which events may unfold, and often as a social value that is highlighted or negotiated in the texts. Think of Abraham’s three divine guests in Gen 18, the two traumatizing stories of hosts, guests and “the men of the city” in Gen 19 and Judg 19, and the overflowing cup put in front of the Psalmist in Ps 23.
This lecture is an anthropological investigation of hospitality in the Hebrew bible. The analysis shows a complex web of socio-cultural values, in which hospitality is sometimes presented as an ultimate and universal value, sometimes merely as nice-to-have and secondary to other socio-cultural concerns. In all instances, however, hospitality is a recognizable type-scene and as such an ideal backdrop for telling tales, both exemplary and horrific, and an ideal literary tool to characterize both people and deities.

"Authenticity" in the (Re)Creation of the Past? A Case Study of the Synagogue in Nazareth Village Open Air Museum.

Nazareth Village Open Air Museum, which opened in the year 2000, attempts to recreate an ‘authentic’ experience from the time of Jesus. Through content analysis and other interdisciplinary contributions from Archaeology, and New Testament, Tourism, Heritage, and Synagogue Studies, the paper critically problematizes the concept of 'authenticity' in the heritagization of sites. It is argued that the language of authenticity inherent to the marketing of Nazareth Open Air Museum leads to a partial illusion, and the integrated role of imagination and emotion in the experience of the past is overlooked. The primary example used to problematize 'authenticity' is the museum’s synagogue (re)construction. Previous research into Nazareth’s importance for Christians has largely focused either on the historical context, or on modern tourism and cultural conflict. The paper points to the relevance of this museum also for New Testament studies, despite its contemporaneity, and suggests ways forward for future research.
