  Widely recognised as a fully accomplished painter and among the first artist-women to succeed in a male-dominated world, scholarship on the extraordinary life and work of Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–c.1656)is abundant. She is rightly credited for expressing unparalleled qualities in giving her female protagonists both emotional depth and agility. However, attributions of most of her surviving works have often been made on stylistic grounds and circumstantial evidence, as she did not always sign or date her paintings. One such unsigned and undated work is the Penitent Magdalene in the collection of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo. Purchased in England as a painting by Jusepe de Ribera and donated to the museum in 1866, the work has since been regarded as puzzling, partly due to the unresolved nature of an object in the depicted woman’s left hand. Revisiting the painting, the aim of this article is to support its attribution to Artemisia Gentileschi through a combination of art historical and technical investigations and to examine the nature of the ‘curious thing’, and to do so at a time when our knowledge of the artist and of workshop production in Naples has expanded.

  The material turn in art history has broadened the scope of research, incorporating previously overlooked artefacts from so-called minor and popular arts into the scholarly discourse. Diversifying the discipline, the turn has also made scholars aware of the long distances and the many intermediators that were involved for the materials to come into the artists’ hands; the material constituencies of their objects of study; and the relations between matter and the senses. This essay critically evaluates key scholarship that motivated art historians to engage with such unpretentious artefacts exemplified by three case studies from the late Middle Ages.

  Stavanger Museum (Norway) preserves an embroidered artefact dating from ca. 1680–1700, known as the Utstein antependium. Depicting six scenes of a woman zealously preparing for the afterlife under divine observation before receiving the Crown of Life, the antependium has puzzled the few scholars who have studied it, as its iconography appears “too Catholic” in post-Reformation Norway. In this article, we argue that the embroidered images and accompanying texts emphasize how a life lived faithfully and charitably on earth would secure one’s place in heaven is also applicable to a Lutheran context. Comparing the antependium’s iconography with previously overlooked votive paintings from the same period, we aim to demonstrate how the maker(s) ingeniously combined image, text, and theological concepts into an unprecedented iconography in textile form in early modern Norway, showing how “she” would receive “the Crown of Life” at the end of time thanks to her spiritually advanced disposition.

  Den 30. november 1979 åpnet en ny middelalderutstilling på Historisk museum i Oslo. Utstillingens design var utformet av den internasjonalt anerkjente arkitekten Sverre Fehn (1924–2009) og museets konservator Martin Blindheim (1916–2009) var kurator. Utstillingens bærende idé var at arkitektur, montre og gjenstander skulle spille sammen, og den ble stående nærmest urørt i 43 år. I løpet av disse årene ble utstillingen like kjent som «Fehn-rommet» som en middelalderutstilling. Med utgangpunkt i en ikonografisk undersøkelse av kalvariegruppen fra Balke kirke (1260–80), vil vi i denne artikkelen se nærmere på de historiske betingelsene for utstillingen i 1979 og vise hvordan et ensidig faglig søkelys på stilkritiske studier og en stor vektlegging av estetiske kvaliteter ved enkeltverk kan ha bidratt til å sementere en ikonografisk identifikasjon som ikke lenger kan anses å være gyldig. Videre ønsker vi å vise betydningen av kunnskap om et verks ikonografi og opprinnelig brukskontekt og oppfordre til at slik kunnskap inkluderes i arbeidet med en eventuell ny permanent utstilling av en av Europas best bevarte samlinger av middelalderens kirkekunst.1

  til under religiøsitetens kulturarv, nemlig brudebenker. I Norge var møbelet spesielt populært på 1600- og 1700-tallet og vi kjenner til rundt 50 stykker fra tiden før 1800. Selv om de er laget for samme formål er det store variasjoner i utsmykning: Det finnes benker med dekor i form av utskjæringer, med figurativt maleri, med innrissede forbannelser eller mer biografiske opplysninger. Brudebenkene er interessante både i en møbelhistorisk og i en kirkehistorisk sammenheng: hvilken funksjon, plassering og utforming hadde de? Og hva kan dette fortelle oss om vigselsritualer fra århundrene brudebenkene var i bruk? I det følgende skal vi analysere et utvalg av norske brudebenker i lys av bryllupsfeiring og vigselsritualer i perioden ca. 1500–1800.

  Abstract Antwerp altarpieces produced between c. 1500–1540 could be remarkably similar and have often been regarded as epitomising the shift from bespoke commissions to standardized objects made to be sold on an open market. The only (preserved) Antwerp altarpiece imported to Norway was commissioned by the priest Ansten Jonsson Skonk and put on display in the parish church of Ringsaker shortly before the Reformation was introduced in Denmark-Norway in 1537. Unique in Norway, the altarpiece is of uncommon character even within the larger body of preserved Antwerp pieces. When analysing the many idiosyncrasies of the Ringsaker altarpiece, it comes across as a deliberately versatile product: on the one hand it carefully reflects altarpieces and devotional practices known to Skonk; on the other, it also reflects contemporary religious disputes of northern Europe more broadly, substantiating the claim that (some) Antwerp workshops intentionally created “multi-confessional” artworks – seemingly to suit the patron(s) in question once installed.

  Linked to the thirteenth century devotional text Meditationes Vitae Christi, visual representations of the Resurrected Christ Appearing to His Mother appear in Italian manuscripts, either of the Meditationes itself or in other devotional treatises around 1300. The epitome of the motif, however, is probably the depiction in the right panel of the Miraflores Triptych, painted by Rogier van der Weyden in Bruges in the 1440s. Previously virtually unnoticed in art historical scholarship, the motif re-appears in Netherlandish carved altarpieces made c.1480–1530. The earliest occurrence seems to be in the form of a minor sculpted scene in the Brussels altarpieces now known as Strängnäs I, yet its more common inclusion is as a painted scene on the inside of the small upper wing to the viewer’s right. Without dismissing the effects of patronage, commissions and the circulation of models, I will argue for the inclusion as partly resulting from artists’ increased partaking in religious reading due to the dissemination of Vita Christi literature in the Netherlands. As it were, however, the motif appears proportionally more frequent in the altarpieces imported to Scandinavia than elsewhere, allowing for discussions about the iconographical program in altarpieces made for export and the possibility of the appreciation of the scene in the north is to be traced not to Vita Christi-literature in general, but to the encounter between mother and son as referenced in the visions of St Birgitta.

  I Vestfossen kirke henger det en, etter hjemlige forhold, helt spesiell altertavle. Den består av alabast, marmor og eik og ble utført i Mechelen rundt 1550, sannsynligvis av en skulptør fra kretsen omkring Jean Mone. I denne artikkelen vil en sammenligning med et samtidig relieff, som nå befinner seg i Washington, kaste nytt lys over den nå delvis ødelagte tavlens ikonografi og materielle betydningslag, mens en kontekstuell og objekt-biografisk tilnærming prøver å besvare hvorfor og hvordan den kom til Eiker prestegjeld i Buskerud.
