Career Support for PhD candidates

In line with UiO’s Standards for Career Support and new national regulations (effective from 1 August 2025), the Faculty of Theology  has created some guidelines to support PhD candidates throughout their research period.

Appointments: All appointed PhD candidates should be associated with one of the Faculty's research groups, with regular meeting points.

Appointment period: PhD candidates will normally be appointed for 3-4 years.

Career development plan: All PhD candidates should have a career development plan that outlines goals for research and other qualifying activities. To initiate this, a meeting will be held shortly after the candidate starts. This meeting includes the PhD candidate, their supervisor, the PhD program leader, and the research adviser, and will form the basis for developing the plan.

Career development talks: All PhD candidates will be invited to an annual talk about career development and CV building. This can take place as part of the annual one-to-one work dialogue with the dean of research.

PhD meetings: To the extent that the number of PhDs employed at a given time allows, the group shall be considered a cohort that meets at least once a semester for discussions and exchange of experiences related to career development. The meetings can also be used for specific competence development measures.

Generic skills: PhD candidates often need to develop general skills that support both their research and future career—such as writing grant applications, building a strong CV, or improving communication and collaboration. These needs can be identified through the career development plan, annual career talks, and PhD cohort meetings. Support for developing these skills may be offered through UiO’s central resources, in collaboration with other units, or through local initiatives at TF.
