  The authors presented in this volume deal with important cases of Protestantization of religion or of debates on religion. One chapter deals with Protestant formatting of contemporary Islam, another discusses how Pentecostal Protestantism has an important role in formatting religion outside Europe today. Two of the authors analyse contemporary debates on circumcision and investigate how Protestant preconceptions influence these debates. Finally, several authors deal with the complex question of how Protestant religion is related to modern Secularity: either as a point of departure for “non-religion”, or as a point of departure for a Protestant understanding of secularity.

  The article discusses how one might reflect further on ecclesiological impacts from Scandinavian creation theology (SCT). The idea is that the SCT from Gustaf Wingren and Knud Ejler Løgstrup opens for an ecclesiology beyond the secular-religious binary. A generous Christianity appears when practices of non-faith (secularity) take place within ecclesia. The article discusses a concrete case from the Swedish congregation Bergsjøen where a makeshift curtain for visiting Muslims is constructed in the church basement. The makeshift curtain could be interpreted as a representation of creation and in this way being an important part of the ministry as a whole. The article discusses with recent Nordic and international ecclesiological and political theology. The conclusion is that, different from Catherine Keller's proposal of a “weak” political theology, SCT opens for an embodied, generous, Christianity.

  I denne boken skriver forskere med ulik faglig bakgrunn om konkrete situasjoner, i nåtid og i fortid, der temaet å være fremmed og hjemme i samme rom står i sentrum. Forskergruppen bak boken har arbeidet med dette stoffet i noen år nå, men i løpet av høsten 2015 og våren 2016 ble temaet radikalt aktuelt gjennom «flyktningkrisen». I 2017 er temaet igjen annerledes: Motstanden mot flyktninger og migranter vokser, mest synlig i Trumps USA, men også i en rekke europeiske land. Uansett skiftende politiske konstellasjoner, det handler helt konkret om hvor mange «fremmede» som skal få være i samme rom, og i ekstreme tilfeller: om våre rom i det hele tatt skal ha noen fremmede. Noen mener det er bedre å hjelpe mennesker der de er. Det er et stadig sterkere synspunkt i alle nasjonalistiske og populistiske grupperinger, både i vårt land og internasjonalt. Når dette sies om mennesker på flukt, betyr der de er vanligvis konfliktens nærområder. Mennesker som drives på flukt på grunn av borgerkrig i Syria skal helst hjelpes i nabolandene, slik at de ikke reiser langt fra nærområdene og kommer som fremmede til oss. Spørsmålet og utfordringen er hvordan en annen og mer generøs utvikling kan begrunnes og praktiseres. Denne boken handler ikke først og fremst om flyktningkrisen og de forskjellige politisk begrunnete forslag som dukker opp til enhver tid. Men vi håper at det vi presenterer kjennes relevant, også for dem som leter etter de gode argumenter, de viktige praksiser og noen skisser av alternativer. Vårt tema er hvilke etiske forpliktelser som følger av det å være i samme rom, hva slags menneskelighet vi er forpliktet på fordi vi deler rom, og hvilke former for asymmetri som kommer til syne og som vi bør kritisk motarbeide når vi er i samme rom.

  Hvordan former og formes vi av de rommene som faktisk finnes, og hvordan kan de mange former for praksis som er fremstilt i denne boken, selv bidra til mer medborgerskap og sosiale rettigheter? Dette er utfordringer som handler om både politikk og etikk. Denne boken har handlet mest om det etiske, men implikasjonene for det politiske og for nye former for medborgerskap er inn- lysende. Ved avrundingen er det viktig å se utenfor rommene og åpne noen perspektiver på hva romlig (heterotopisk) praksis kan bety for spørsmålet om hva medborgerskap er og bør være. Utgangspunktet er det helt enkle: Bokens hovedtema er hvordan nye former for romlige fellesskap skapes når fremmede er inne og grensene mellom gjest og vert destabiliseres. Om det nå handlet om fremmede nonner som drev sykehus, ikke-kristne og irregulære flyktninger midt i et kirkebygg, funksjons- hemmede i høymessen eller sykehjemsbeboere med demens som veksler mel- lom sine ulike rom, det handler om ett tema: Det er ikke nok å beskrive selve rommet, vi må se menneskene inne i rommene, hva de gjør og hvordan de kan være dypt forbundne med hverandre. De forskjellige kapitlene har gitt sine ulike perspektiver på bokens hoved- tema. Men hvordan kan vi koble denne analysen av de romlige, kroppslige og dypt forbundne konkrete møtene med verden utenfor? Boken viser hvordan romlig praksis kan ha normativ betydning. Vi kan få øye på en politisk betyd- ning dersom vi løfter blikket litt lenger opp og knytter forbindelsen mellom de lokale og spesifikke studiene i denne boken og noen mer overgripende faglige diskusjoner.

  Føler vi også et ubehag når vi er så priviligerte i global og urettferdig verden? Skandinaver er stort sett privilegerte.   The crisis of modern Western secularity has prompted an analysis of the category of the secular. The presumption that modernity would lead to religious decline and increasing privatization of religion and that this European pattern could serve as a universal template for modernization has given way to an investigation into the variety of secularities, secularizations, and secularisms. Consequently, the focus has shifted to multiple secularities in a variety of national and cultural contexts, both in Europe and elsewhere. Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are notably underresearched in this respect. In global comparisons, they are often grouped under Europe, but in European debates, they are often omitted or placed in the category of countries with established churches (such as England or Greece). Their distinctively Lutheran brand of Protestantism poses a challenge to our theories of secularization and our conceptions of secularity. A highly secular public (in terms of belief and practice), yet a strong religious presence in their legal systems and public institutions, is characteristic of these Nordic countries. From the perspective of Protestant theology, this ambiguity has been characterized as ‘a hidden sacrality’ in the secular. More interdisciplinary research is needed, however. From the perspective of the social sciences, this ambiguity has not been addressed other than in that it reveals a lack of secularity or secularization. This book examines Scandinavian secularity and explores a range of explanations and interpretations of this ambiguous reality. Combining contributions from the social sciences (law, sociology, and political science) with theology and religious studies, the book's individual contributors explore ways of coming to terms with this ambiguity within their respective disciplines.

  The crisis of modern Western secularity has prompted an analysis of the category of the secular. The presumption that modernity would lead to religious decline and the increasing privatization of religion, and that this European pattern could serve as a universal template for modernization, has given way to an investigation into the variety of secularities, secularizations, and secularisms. Consequently, the focus has shifted to multiple secularities in a variety of national and cultural contexts, both in Europe and elsewhere. Scandinavian countries such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden are notably underresearched in this respect. In global comparisons, they are often grouped under Europe, but in European debates, they are often omitted or placed in the category of countries with established churches (such as England or Greece). Their distinctively Lutheran brand of Protestantism poses a challenge to our theories of secularization and our conceptions of secularity. These Nordic countries are characterized by a highly secular public (in terms of belief and practice), yet a strong religious presence in their legal systems and public institutions. From the perspective of Protestant theology, this ambiguity has been characterized as ‘a hidden sacrality’ in the secular. More interdisciplinary research is, however, needed. From a social-scientific perspective, this ambiguity has not been addressed beyond noting a lack of secularity or secularization. This book examines Scandinavian secularity and explores a range of explanations and interpretations of this ambiguous reality. Drawing on contributions from the social sciences (law, sociology, and political science) and theology and religious studies, the book's contributors explore ways to come to terms with this ambiguity within their respective disciplines.

  In this concluding chapter, we summarize some of the findings of this anthology, arguing that the ‘Scandinavian secularities’ we have examined across a range of public domains in the Nordic countries differ from Calvinist and American Protestant contexts in a key respect: they reflect a deep intertwinement of religion and secular public spheres, including at the state and political levels. This intertwinement cannot be understood as a mere relic of the past. As the product of modern political choices and distinctively Scandinavian ways of being, it highlights the need to rethink prevailing conceptions of secularization and secularity, and to bring the Lutheran Nordic variant of Protestantism into the broader international discussion of the secular.

  Questions on what it means to live and die well are raised and discussed in the hospice movement. A phenomenological lifeworld perspective may help professionals to be aware of meaningful and important dimensions in the lives of persons close to death. Lifeworld is not an abstract philosophical term, but rather the opposite. Lifeworld is about everyday, common life in all its aspects. In the writings of Cicely Saunders, known as the founder of the modern hospice movement, facets of lifeworld are presented as important elements in caring for dying patients. Palliative care and palliative medicine today are, in many ways, replacing hospices. This represents not only a change in name, but also in the main focus. Hospice care was originally very much about providing support and comfort for, and interactions with the patients. Improved medical knowledge today means improved symptomatic palliation, but also time and resources spent in other ways than before. Observations from a Nordic hospice ward indicate that seriously ill and dying persons spend much time on their own. Different aspects of lifeworld and intersubjectivity in the dying persons’ room is presented and discussed.
