Academic interests
I am interested in examining the role of religion in shaping the social and the natural environments, both in lived contexts and in media representations, with the aim of contributing to development. My current research focuses on the potential of religion to promote environmental sustainability. I explore the environmental worldviews, texts, and practices of diverse religious actors.
Background
I hold a PhD in the Sociology of Religion from the University of Agder (2025), where my research explored the socio-political context and media coverage of recent controversies involving the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. I also hold an MA in Global Journalism (NLA University College, 2018), an MA in Journalism and Communication (Addis Ababa University, 2011), a BA in Journalism and Communication (Bahir Dar University, 2008), and a diploma in History (Gondar College of Teacher Education, 2004).
I have extensive teaching experience across Ethiopia and Norway, covering topics such as journalism, communication, development, religious radicalization, violent extremism, evangelical and charismatic movements, Islam in the West, and religion and media in global contexts. I began my teaching career in Ethiopia, where I also held leadership roles including Academic Vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Head of the Department of Journalism and Communication at Bahir Dar University.
I am affiliated with the Department of Religion, Philosophy, and History at the University of Agder in Kristiansand.
Earlier, I coordinated and participated in international partnership programs that aimed at strengthening journalism education and research in Sweden, Norway, and Ethiopia.
