Academic interests

My research explores early modern visual and material culture which lies at the intersection of religion, the sciences and art. Topics of interest include the interaction between the image and the efficacy of sacred material including topics such as miraculous images and their reproductions, the relationship between relics and images, and acheiropoieton (the image made without human hands). I am also interested in the relationship between biblical exegesis and natural philosophy, and images that document empirical knowledge and play a role in epistemology.

Present research examines the agency of devotional objects and sensory, embodied approaches to material culture. My current project examines sixteenth-century Netherlandish depictions of the Three Kings, paying close attention to the material richness of clothing, jewellery and the gifts to explore the entanglement of material wealth, expanding global trade and spiritual meaning. Another ongoing project focuses on the rhetoric of the Renaissance portal of the Church of the Cross (Korskirken) in Bergen, Norway.

My previous PhD project examined the sixteenth-century reception of the relic of the Holy Burial Shroud of Christ and its influence on image theory at the time of the counter-Reformation and the role it played in early modern scientific research of Bolognese natural philosopher Ulisse Aldrovandi.

Courses taught

While my primary specialisation lies in the early modern period’s visual culture my teaching experience spans a broad spectrum of art history across both bachelor and master programs. Courses I have taught include Medieval and Early Modern Art and Architecture; Introduction to Theatre, Art History and Digital Culture; Classical Architecture and Art; Rhetorical Traditions; Modern Architecture; and Art Theory and Historiography. I have also taught academic writing and research dissemination.

Background

I earned my PhD in Art history from the University in Bergen in 2025. I have a master’s degree in art history with research focusing on Rembrandt van Rijn and the seventeenth-century conceptions of sight and touch, metaphorical blindness in the Bible and early modern philosophy, and the role of the senses in the production knowledge and artistic production. I also hold a bachelor’s in European arts from the University of Kent, UK and have studied art history at the University of Bologna, in Italy.

Between 2022-2026 I have been a university lecturer at the University of Bergen. In addition to my publications on early modern visual and material culture, I have also acted as co-editor for several anthologies on material religion and epistemic images.
