Academic Interests
I am a philosopher with academic interests spanning from ethics, environmental philosophy, political philosophy to metaphysics, and epistemology. I have a particular interest in German Idealism, Critical Theory, philosophy of nature, and the philosophy of childhood.
My thinking is oriented toward both English and German philosophy, as well as Scandinavian philosophers. I have worked on thinkers such as G.W.F. Hegel, Hans Jonas, Theodor W. Adorno, Holmes Rolston, Knud E. Løgstrup, Alfred North Whitehead, Val Plumwood, Charles Taylor, Hans Skjervheim, and Arne Næss.
As a philosopher, I am committed to using philosophy to shed light on contemporary societal issues. I write not only for academic philosophers but also for a broader public audience. Questions that concern me include:
- What is nature? And what is the relationship between humans and nature?
- Does nature have intrinsic value beyond its utility for humans?
- Do we have a moral responsibility toward nature?
- What is the role of recognition in human life?
- What is freedom?
- What does it mean that humans are historical beings?
I have also written critically about the marketization of society and the instrumentalization of people and social relationships. More recently, I have examined the distinct nature of childhood and how children can be protected from being reduced to mere means for adults' plans. I have also written about madness and illness, and what separates legitimate medical activity from medical overactivity.
Background
I hold a PhD in philosophy from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and work as a researcher in ethics, environmental philosophy, and ecotheology. I earned my MA in philosophy from the University of Oslo, with an exchange semester at the University of Heidelberg.
My authorship spans environmental ethics, philosophy of nature, history of philosophy, political philosophy, and the philosophy of childhood. In addition to my research, I have extensive experience in communicating philosophy through radio, newspapers, short films, lectures, panel discussions, and school visits. I have received several awards for my nonfiction writing.
I am the author of three books: Naturfilosofi (2018), Ville verdier: Naturfilosofi i menneskets tidsalder (2023), and Hegel: En ganske enkel bok om en vanskelig filosof. In 2025, I will publish Så setter vi oss på huk: Filosofi på høyde med barn, a book on the philosophy of childhood.
I have also co-edited two debate anthologies: Ingen mennesker er født frie (2017) and Markedsmennesker (2020).
