The architecture of the Constantinian Church of the Holy Sepulchre was both a receptacle for Jesus tradition as well as a vehicle for the transmission of ideological interpretations of that tradition and the person that it commemorated. It was a bifocal complex, incorporating the traditional sites of Golgotha and the tomb of Jesus in its layout.

Antonius er en egyptisk kristen munk fra det tredje og fjerde århundret. Han blir ofte kalt alle munkers far for sin betydning for utviklingen av klosterbevegelsen. Athanasius av Alexandria skrev Antonius' biografi. Denne inspirerte Hieronymus (d. 420) til å skrive en rivaliserende biografi om en annen tidlig munk, Paulus Eremitten. Bremmers forelesning vil ta for seg Hieronymus' bruk, og kanskje misbruk,  av Antonius-biografien.
