A sense of humour is usually understood as a positive trait of character, and sometimes even put forward as an asset to political emancipation and reconciliation. But is this really true? Can only the tolerant person have a sense of humour? Looking at the Israeli author Amos Oz’s account of humour in his essay How to Cure a Fanatic, this presentation aims to make us aware of what is involved in the appeal to humour for political reasons.

Ola Sigurdson is Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Gothenburg.
