Sacrifice has become a key concept for philosophical analysis of religion and culture, faith, violence, and responsibility in late 20th and early 21st century thought. Two main strands of the discussion may be identified in French phenomenology and in the influential philosophy of culture advocated by Rene Girard. Given the plurality and mutual interference of religious traditions, and facing religious and political violence in conflicts all over the world, the question of sacrifice appears also to break open new perspectives for philosophy of religion in the years to come. Hence, the European Society for Philosophy of Religion (ESPR) has dedicated its 17th biennial conference in Oslo August 28-31, 2008 to the problem of Sacrifice. The 8 main papers are now available online (password protected). After registration and payment you will receive a password. All participants are expected to read the main papers before the conference starts, since the plenary discussions are based on these papers. Professors, postdocs, and PhD students were invited to submit a paper abstract for one of the four subtopics. Cf. our call for papers. The 44 accepted papers will be presented and discussed in parallel sessions. The Competition for scholars from Eastern Europe (awarded with NOK 3000) was won by:
