Use of personal data in research

Various bodies must be notified or permission must be sought before personal data can be obtained and used in research.

Medical and health research is defined as activity performed using scientific methods to develop new knowledge on health and illnesses. A special quality system exists in this field, and describes routines and procedures. For this type of research, permission must be sought from the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics (REC).

Other types of research using personal data must be reported to the Data Protection Official for Research, which in the case of the University of Oslo is Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD).

At the Faculty of Theology, all relevant research projects are subject to an advance assessment by the Research Ethics Committee. This applies to research projects at all levels, both PhD projects and Master’s projects, as well as employees’ own research projects.

Projects must be reported to the Committee on a dedicated form. Contact forskningsadministrasjon@teologi.uio.no to receive the form, and for more information.
