Politics of Tradition: Towards an Agonistic Theology

Abstract:

The project explores theological conceptualizations of tradition and diversity in the theologies of Gerhard Ebeling (Hermeneutical) and Kathryn Tanner (Postmodern) and subsequently brings these conceptions into dialogue with Chantal Mouffe's agonistic pluralism. The project advocates an agonistic theology, in which constructed traditions function to widen an interpretative space and destabilize contemporary interpretative hegemonies. In a wider sense, the project also elaborates on theological judgement and methodology from the perspective of the relation between theology and contemporary intellectual thinking.
