Supervision on the Ph.D.-program

On admission to the ph.d.-program, the faculty will appoint a supervisor. Supervisor and candidate have mutual duties and rights in relation to one another, that are regulated through the ph.d. contract.

The supervisor is appointed by the ph.d.-leader in consultation with the Dean of studies. A second supervisor is appointed when there is a scholarly need.

Ph.d.-candidates do not have a right to further supervision over and above the admission period. A supervisor can not stand down from their posision until a new supervisor is appointed.

Supervisor(s) should:

  • See to it that the candidate takes part in an active research environment and introduce them to relevant scholarly environments;
  • Give advice concerning the formulation and delimitation of themes and problems and see to it that hypotheses and methods are discusses;
  • Give help in orienting themselves concerning the scholarly literature and data (libraries, archives, etc.)
  • Discuss the set-up and implementation of the presentation (structure, linguistic form, documentation, etc.);
  • Keep themselves oriented on the candidate’s progress and assess it in relation to the plan;
  • Discuss results and their interpretation;
  • Give the candidate supervision in research ethical questions connected to the dissertation.

The Doctoral candidate should: 

  • Present reports or drafts of parts of the dissertation to the supervisor in connection with the doctorate contract;
  • Follow the research ethical principles applicable to the discipline.

Both supervisors and candidates will undertake to:

  • Give each other up to date information on all conditions of significance for the implementation of the ph.d. training;
  • Actively follow up situations that may lead to the danger of delayed or terminated implementation of the ph.d. training;
  • Carry out and hand in annual progress reports. These should provide orientation concerning work progress, changes in plans and working conditions, financing, etc. and inform the faculty concerning any problems.
