Research Areas
The Faculty of Theology is the only university-based theological faculty in Norway. The faculty aims to be an attractive, internationally oriented and leading theological academic environment in Norway and the Nordic countries.
The Faculty’s prioritised research areas
The faculty prioritises three areas where it has particularly strong international research expertise:
- Studies in the Bible and Antiquity
- The Reformation and Protestant Religion
- Ethics, Religious Dialogue and Diaconal Studies
The Faculty’s Fields of Expertise
The prioritised research areas represent a focus across Theology’s classical disciplines and academic areas. Parallel with the prioritised research areas, the faculty is dependent – as a vocational training faculty – on maintaining a good research standard within a series of theological research fields, that partly overlap with the prioritised focus areas.
- The Old Testament
- The New Testament
- Patristics
- The Late Middle Ages and the Reformation
- Recent Norwegian Church history
- Ethics
- Dogmatics
- Inter-religious Studies
- Diaconal Studies
- Gender, Theology and Religion
- Rituals and Liturgical Research
- Philosophy of Religion
Religion in Pluralistic Societies (PluRel)
The Faculty of Theology is the host faculty for the inter-faculty research area Religion in Pluralistic Societies (PluRel), a collaboration between six faculties at the University of Oslo on research and academic development in religion.
