Academic Interests

I am interested in the Bible and all the different discourses in which these texts are involved. By use of theories from Gender Studies and Cultural Studies my research emphasize the ongoing dynamics and complex processes between ancient texts and meaning production today. In my research I have focused on how New Testament texts can be placed in the historical context in which they were produced (Jewish, Greco-Roman), to see how early Christian literature interact with other ideas and practices in antiquity. My recent book Gossip and Gender: Othering of Speech in the Pastoral Epistles (2009) uses theories from a variety of other disciplines to ask new questions to New Testament texts (http://www.degruyter.com/cont/fb/th/detailEn.cfm?id=IS-9783110215632-1). But Biblical texts also have an afterlife, an effect history: these texts continue to construct identity and contribute significantly to memory processes in our time, in the age of globalization. In particular, I have worked to develop the concept known from Feminist theory and Race theory called “Intersectionality” as an useful analytical tool for New Testament tudies. Recently I have also paid attention to the role of biblical texts in interreligious dialogues and art. One important task for Biblical researchers is to participate in the broader interdisciplinary discussion and development of theory, and I am glad to work in an academic environment in which this challenge has a high priority.

I have been “Program Unit Chair” for Society of Biblical Literature’s International Meeting for “The Pastoral and Catholic Epistles. From 2010 I am, together with Jeremy Hultin (Yale University) responsible for a new consultation: “Speech and Talk: Discourses and Social Practices in the Ancient Mediterranean World” at SBL Annual Meeting (http://www.sbl-site.org/meetings/Congresses_ProgramUnits.aspx?MeetingId=17). I also collaborate with New Testament colleagues at UNISA (University of South Africa) on research conferences and publications.
